A highlight from Fine Furniture, Carpets, Ceramics and Works of Art is this painted six fold room screen, in 18th century style and dating from the 19th century. One side is painted with central reserves in polychrome depicting classical scenes of maidens and winged cherubs amongst clouds. These are flanked above and below with reserves painted in monochrome with putti playing and separate reserves depicting urns of various forms. The reverse of the screen is painted in gold and polychrome with Chinese figures in traditional dress and dragons. Folding screens originated in ancient China, and in written references can be dated to the 4th century BC, during the Han Dynasty, however, it is likely they date from earlier. They were initially made to act as room separators, and not to be moved around frequently. The first Chinese screens were made of wooden panels and decorated with fine art. Scenes from life in the palace, mythological themes and motifs from nature were invariably painted on the screen panels. The sale goes on view this weekend from Sunday 24 March | 10am-2pm #dreweatts #donningtonpriory #finefurniture #interiors #interiordecorating #countryhome #countryliving #classicalscenes #paintedfurniture #worksofart #roomscreen #fineantiques

At the end of the month we have Modern First Editions | 28 March Pictured | W. Heath Robinson’s, ‘Female figure over Sydney Harbour’, an original watercolour illustration on thick card, signed ‘W. Heath Robinson’, probably c. 1909. The illustration is a sophisticated, early Heath Robinson work, possibly adapted for illustrations in Rudyard Kipling’s The Song of the English, first printed in London by Hodder and Stoughton in 1909. Heath Robinson is possibly now best known for his intricate drawings of complex machines designed to realise simple objectives, however, in his early career he produced many book illustrations, notably for Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish Fairy Tales and Legends, (1897), The Arabian Nights, (1899) and Charles Kingsley’s The Water-Babies (1915), amongst others. #bloomsburyauctions #modernfirsteditions #firsteditions #heathrobinson #watercolour #workoncard #worksofart #illustration
