Coming up on Wednesday 24 February we have our Interiors auction, featuring a wide array of furniture, sculpture, works of art, pictures and ceramics. Ahead of the auction, Dreweatts Interior specialist Ashley Matthews, picks out some of the highlights.
A highlight from the auction is Lot 185 – a set of six Sheraton Revival dining chairs - a detail of which is featured on the front cover of the catalogue. These date from the late 19th century but are faithfully made in the late 18th century style. The striking ‘spider-web’ backs are fashioned from mahogany and feature satinwood veneers.
The sale also features a collection of painted tinware trays and objects from a private collection, Marlborough. From this collection we have Lot 308, a Regency hand painted tinware tray, probably made in Pontypool circa 1820. It is beautifully decorated with a scene of cattle, sheep and a pack animal after the manner of work by George Morland. It is then finished with an octagonal gallery with the carrying handles incorporated.
Continuing through the sale we also have Lot 342, a large American walnut and inlaid compactum wardrobe. It is typically late Victorian in appearance and designed in the manner of the celebrated cabinet makers Edwards & Roberts. It was retailed by Maple & Co and still bears one of their enamel trade labels to the inside of one of the cupboard doors. It probably was once part of a larger suite of similar bedroom furniture.
Finally, we also have Lot 439, this rather charming 20th century painted papier-mâché model of a giraffe.
The species Giraffa camelopardalis is currently split into nine sub-species. The name Giraffe probably coming from the Arabic Zarafah which translates to fast walker, camelopardalis originating from an archaic English name as a portmanteau of Camel and Leopard referring to the camel-like shape and leopard-like markings.
