This saga-like pseudo-history of the mist-shrouded beginnings of elves and men in Middle Earth was begun by Tolkien as early as 1916. An early draft was turned down for publication after the success of The Hobbit as obscure and too Celtic, and was set aside unfinished. It remained unpublished on the authors death, appearing first in this edition some four years later, with a text completed by his son, Christopher, from unpublished papers and materials. It was received with mixed reviews, but has come to be seen as a difficult but incontestably majestic work, in keeping in its wide-ranging scope with Tolkiens other works.
