Used by the German Military and the Luftwaffe during WWII, an important archive of maps and pamphlets relating to Operation Sealion (codename for the German invasion of Britain) comes to auction on Wednesday 6th November in Dreweatts and Baldwin's Military Sale.

Entitled, Militargeographische Angaben Uber England, the Briefing booklets, illustrate places and road junctions in the UK that German intelligence thought should be attacked as part of the British invasion. Along with maps and photographs, the booklets detail particular regions and sites to be besieged, including major London train stations and industrial areas.

The collection gives us a very real indication of the extensive knowledge German Military had of the British Isles. Maps of the South coast include soil composition for potential landing places and profile views of the coastline and cliffs.

Their observations of Kingswear include targets along the River Dart, marked with purple arrows indicating angles and directions of attacks. Other details include the population density of Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds, captured in maps through shading.

This unusual and comprehensive group was accumulated by Lionel Leventhal of Arms and Armour Press, a specialist Military Books Publisher who spent his career collecting curiosities that related to the books he was publishing.

It is estimated to sell for £400-600 [Lot 319].

The auction, comprising medals, orders, decorations and militaria will take place at Dreweatts Maddox Street Saleroom in Mayfair on Wednesday 6th November.
