Commission your own Modern Masterpiece at Dreweatts’ Exhibition & Silent Auction

16 - 20 September, Donnington Priory, Newbury

Dreweatts is holding the Modern Masters Exhibition and Silent Auction at Donnington Priory in Newbury from 16 – 20 September, in support of UCARE to raise awareness and money for research into the various urinary cancers such as prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancer.

Drawing from the plethora of highly talented local artists from Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire, Dreweatts has carefully selected a group of ‘Modern Masters’ each with an international reputation who will be exhibiting and selling their work over the four days and have generously agreed to contribute to the ‘silent auction’; bids can be left with Dreweatts and at the end of the four days the successful bidders will be contacted. There is no admission charge for the exhibition but visitors will be able to make a voluntary donation to UCARE on site or leave a bid for the auction, knowing that all the money raised goes to a very worthwhile cause.

“This is an exciting opportunity to see work by modern masters in a traditional setting, said Clive Stewart-Lockhart, Dreweatts Deputy Chairman.

Showcasing their creations will be The Edward Barnsley Workshop, the portrait painter Tom Coates, the jeweller Peter Page and the sculptor Johannes von Stumm:

The Edward Barnsley Workshop in Froxfield, Hampshire: Edward Barnsley (1900 – 1987) is regarded as one of most important furniture makers of the 20th century having continued the tradition from his father, Sidney Barnsley, who was instrumental in establishing the Arts & Crafts movement in Britain. That tradition continues today in the original workshop, which sits on a wooded hillside with stunning views across the South Downs.

The successful bidder will be taught by an experienced Barnsley craftsman and gain the chance to observe and learn some of the specialized techniques employed to produce their finely crafted bespoke furniture. They will also be able to make and take away their own mini masterpiece as a memento of this experience. The Barnsley Workshop is world-renowned and places on its apprentice scheme are hotly contested every year.

Tom Coates is a past President of The Royal Society of British Artists and The New English Art Club. His work ranges from landscapes to portraits and equestrian pieces and has included commissions by HM The Queen, HRH Prince of Wales and the English Cricket Team. Tom works in oils, watercolours and pastel and at Dreweatts he is offering to paint a portrait for the highest bidder.

Peter Page is an innovative jeweller who works in gold and platinum with precious and semi precious stones. Commissioned and collected by galleries and a worldwide clientele, his creations are distinctive yet highly wearable. For the auction he will design a piece of jewellery in consultation with the successful bidder with UCARE providing £750 worth of gold.

Johannes von Stumm is well known to local residents as his 5 ton, 16 ft high steel sculpture Couple in Conversation, graces the centre of Newbury. Working primarily in steel, marble/stone, granite and glass, his work has also been exhibited this year as far afield as Miami and New Delhi. In his third year as President of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, Johannes will be offering a piece of work for the auction.
