Michael is a self-employed bibliographical and art consultant. After many years specialising in illustrated and private press books, the original artwork for illustrations, children's books, juvenilia, the performing arts, particularly conjuring and circus, fine printing, and printing history, Michael was invited to join Bloomsbury Auctions in 2004. As an independent consultant he has produced valuations for the purpose of insurance, probate, or private sale to institutional bodies including the Victoria and Albert Museum. He has contributed to the new Dictionary of National Biography and bibliographical journals; Michael worked in an advisory capacity for the Basilisk Press from its inception until the untimely death of its owner. He prepared the catalogue for the Contemporary Private Press Exhibition at the Swiss Cottage Library in 1976; and has worked on a number of other exhibitions, the most important being "Richard Doyle and his Family" at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1983. Michael sat on two advisory committees relating to contemporary book production and bindings for the Craft Council, and am a founder member on the committee of the Imaginative Book Illustration Society. He has given talks on a range of subjects to various societies such as the Printing Historical Society, IBIS, The Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles, and the Magic Circle.
