Lectionary leaf , in Latin, from a decorated manuscript on parchment...

Sold for £200

Est: £300–500

Lectionary leaf , in Latin, from a decorated manuscript on parchment [northern Spain, first half of the fourteenth century]

Single large leaf, with double column of 27 lines of a most unusual formal script (written space: 295 by 203mm.), capitals touched in iridescent red, rubrics in same, three variegated initials in red or blue with ornate curling penwork in contrasting colours, one large variegated initial in red and blue with red and blue penwork foliage within and with alternate red and blue jagged edge leaf shapes ascending the inner margin upwards from the initial, slight discolouration to edges from old water damage or earlier mount, overall good condition, 342 by 267mm.

The script here is initially baffling, and resembles little else from the Iberian Peninsula. Its tall and angular aspect, with pronounced fishtailing to some ascenders and wedges to ends of long penstrokes looks most like thirteenth- or fourteenth-century French or English models of formal bookhand, and this impression is consolidated by the employment of the jagged edged leaf shapes in the border decoration. Much of the Spanish book arts employed elements from elsewhere in Europe, and here the scribe would appear to be drawing his influence from models from the Anglo-French world.

The main text is that for 14 April, the Passion of SS. Valerian, Tiburtius and Maximus, and thus the text which replaced the Pasionario hispánico in the previous lot.
