⁂ Visit to Amsterdam to see the Old Masters and the field of Waterloo: "June 9th Monday Started in the morning for Waterloo by the 10.30 train went to a station beyond Waterloo, and walked to the Belgic Lion which is a large mound raised by the Belgians in memory of those who fell in the battle of Waterloo, under it were those who were killed on both sides, we went to the top of it and had a good view of the old battle field, the English Army was formed in two lines, in a sort of half circle having the house of Huguemont as… centre… . We saw the monuments to Colonel Gordon and to the German legion… the land is very open and capital for manoevering and army, no hedges, the land rather undulating. We walked to the farm of Huguemont and saw the loopholes made in the wall of the orchard by the English to fire on the enemy… ."
