Gervaise (Nicolas) - Description Historique du Royaume de Macacar,
Description Historique du Royaume de Macacar,
first edition, lacking final blank, occasional spotting, lightly browned, contemporary calf, head of spine and corners worn, rubbed, scarce, 12mo, Paris, Hilaire Foucault, 1688.
⁂ Nicolas Gervaise was a young priest and missionary in Siam from 1681 to 1688. According to his own testimony he travelled widely in Siam and was competent in the language. His descriptions of the Macassars and their kingdom are amongst the earliest eye-witness accounts of the region. Gervaise brought back two young princes from Macassar to France where he presented them to the court, placing their education in the hands of Father Lachaise, the King's confessor and dedicatee of the present work. Gervaise was murdered by Caribbean natives in 1729 during a missionary expedition to the river Aquira.
