first edition , second issue with errata leaf (bound after preliminaries) but without Dd4 (final blank), 16 folding engraved plates, contemporary ink inscription "George Gauld 1767" at head of title (date very slightly shaved), light foxing and browning, title torn and repaired and slightly water-stained, modern mottled calf in period style, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco label, very slightly rubbed, [Baillie p.270; Clockmakers' 218; Tardy p.58], 4to, [by J.Hughes] for the Author, 1766.
⁂ The author was a mathematician, mechanic and clock- and watchmaker from Edinburgh who worked in London and was one of the examiners of Harrison's longitude watch. This is the only English edition of his first book, one of 2 issues published in the same year, this with an errata leaf.
