first edition , half-title, 3 folding engraved maps and 12 folding or double-page plates, folding letterpress tables (lacking table at p.85, supplied in good facsimile), slight worming to fore-edge of frontispiece and title (not affecting image or text, repaired), some light browning and offsetting, one folding plate torn and repaired, contemporary ink inscription of "Peter Brooke, Meare" on front free endpaper, contemporary calf, a little rubbed and marked, rebacked with gilt spine preserving old red label, [Baillie p.297; Clockmakers' 701; Sabin 62572; Tardy p.198], 4to, J.Nourse, 1774.
⁂ Important voyage into northern latitudes, including a young Horatio Nelson who served as a midshipman (aged 14) aboard the Carcass , which along with the Racehorse set sail in 1773 in search of a route to India via the Arctic while carrying out scientific and zoological research. Also on board was the astronomer Israel Lyons with various items of scientific equipment including two timekeepers sent by the Board of Longitude for testing: Kendal's K2 and a box chronometer by Arnold. Phipps also took a pocket chronometer by Arnold which proved to be more accurate than the others.
