A French musical automaton diorama, unsigned, late 19th century, the scene modelled from painted card and wood with central feature of rocking warship before a viaduct with running train, the left hand side with rustic scene incorporating rotaing windmill and water wheel features, the right hand side with half timbered house, on ebonised wood base containing musical mechanism playing melodies via a three-inch pinned cylinder and tuned steel comb and with take-off to drive the various moving features via a system of pulleys and lines, the side with start / stop and repeat / change operation plungers (currently not working, losses and damage, lacking dome), 47cm wide, 40cm high; now with a glass box cover.
Extremely damaged, requiring restoration to diorama, particularly upper section, and attention to mechanical movement.
