A Victorian silver novelty beehive inkwell by John Samuel Hunt, London 1851, engraved Hunt & Roskell late Storr, Mortimer & Hunt 5417 and stamped 3739 to the feet, in the form of a straw bee skep with a bee finial to the hinged cover, a silver mounted cut glass inkwell beneath, on a twisted vine apron with three conforming feet, 11.5cm (4 3/4in) high, 425g (13.7 oz) weighable
Provenance: Unknown auction, 12th October 1978, lot 295 (possibly Phillips, Son & Neale).
Hinge loose and has been repaired with silver solder, cover sits up at one side, bee showing signs of wear, straw-work generally crisp (bit of wear near the bee). Marks (beneath) crisp, maker lightly struck. Small hole on solder seem beneath. Well silver top fully marked. Stuck fast to the cut glass bottle, small chip to shoulder, 2cm crack from top.
