The pair, The Horses Starting for the Great St Leger Stakes; The Horses Passing the Judges Stand Aquatints printed in colours and finished by hand By R.W. Smart and Charles Hunt [Siltzer p.221] 1832 and 1833, S. & J. Fuller Each c.41 x 66 cm (16 x 26 in) ⁂ Doncaster is one of the oldest race courses, being created in 1614 after failed attempts to banish racing from the area overall, due to the troublesome crowds the racing attracted. The St Leger Stakes is named after its founder, Colonel Anthony St Leger, who founded it in 1776, making it today the world's oldest classic race.
