Sold for £200
A Victorian tortoiseshell and ivory strung jewellery box, last quarter 19th century, of rectangular form, the hinged cover with inset vacant mother-of-pearl panel, the front with conforming escutcheon, the red velvet lined interior with lift out tray, 10.5cm high, 30cm wide, 20cm deep
Exterior is scuffed and worn in places overall consistent with age and use. Veneers are lifting in places. Some minor elements of tortoiseshell are missing and the vacant spaces have been painted to simulate tortoiseshell.
Shaping of the mother-of-pearl panel to the lid is clumsy and it might be a later addition.
Screws are missing from the lid part of the left hinge.
Interior is later relined.
The tortoiseshell is repaired and faulty as per photos
