A gilt brass aneroid pocket barometer compendium with altimeter, thermometer and compass
Dring and Fage, London, late 19th century
The circular silvered register with rotating outer scale calibrated 0 to 8000 for altitude in feet divided into tenths, the inner scale calibrated for barometric inches divided into twentieths, the centre with curved mercury tube Fahrenheit scale thermometer beneath signature Dring & Fage, LONDON, Compensated , in cylindrical frosted gilt brass case with small floating mother of pearl compass inscribed SINGER'S PATENT, 22232 to verso , 5cm (2ins) diameter.
The firm of Dring and Fage are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from several addresses in London from 1798 until well in to the 20th century.
Instrument generally appears to be in fine condition with only very light discolouration to the gilt finish in places. The rotating section of the case which incorporates the outer scale and front glass can be removed/lifted from the case, although there is no obvious damage we presume that this should not happen. The mechanism will respond to change in pressure (has been bag tested) but pointer currently giving incorrect reading so will require adjustment. The thermometer is intact and apears to be working. Outer case is intact but has some wear and the buttons that operate the clasps for both covers are lacking.
