An award winning 1/32 scale model of the 1893 Paddle Steamer ‘ Albion’ , hand built by Mr John Beddis of Bristol with a gas-fired live steam plant powered from a Yarrow type copper boiler, with fitted pressure gauge and sight glass, the diagonal twin cylinder engine to the Edgar T. Westbury design, of 1 ½ inch stroke by ¾ inch bore, with Stephenson’ s valve gear directly coupled to 5 ¾ inch diameter paddle wheels, the plank-effect decking with detailed rigging, life boats, passenger seating, ship's wheel, lamps and steps, equipped for radio-controlled operation, 192cm long, 50cm wide.
Boiler History: Southern Federation of Model Engineers boiler certificate No.6606. Expired 29 th July 2007. Hydraulic pressure 113 p.s.i. Working pressure 50 p.s.i.
Awards: Silver medal at the 1997 Olympia Model Engineering Exhibition; The Roy Fedden Trophy at the Bristol Model Engineering Exhibition; Best Model at the 1998 Eastnor Park Model Show.
Note: This paddle steamer was built by J. & G. Thomson of Clydebank and was launched as the 'Slieve Donard' for the Belfast & County Down Railway. In 1899 she was purchased by P. & A. Campbell Ltd to operate in the Bristol Channel and along the South Coast. A bombing raid on Dunkirk during the First World War ended her service life but her engines were transferred to the 'Glen Gower', launched in 1922, and remained operational until that vessel was scrapped in 1960.
