Children's and Illustrated Books
The fear that the interest in these 18th and 19th century charming relics of childhoods past might have declined with the sad passing away of many of the generation of major collectors has proved completely unfounded. Prices continue to reach stratospheric levels.
In early 2013, we had the pleasure of selling the Mark Ottignon Collection of Beatrix Potter; the sale included fine rare first editions as well as photographs and letters relating to the treasured author. The lot illustrated above was amongst the sale highlights.
As is the case with Modern Firsts, condition is one of the major factors in determining desirability of a Children's book. Once more, it is the range of material we handle, from Aesop to The Zankiwank and the Bletherwitch (illustrated by Arthur Rackham and usually selling for about £500–600), from Beatrix Potter to Harry Potter, from Doctor Doolittle to Dr.Seuss, from Rupert to Paddington to Edward (Pooh) Bear, that appeals to our customers.
Re-visit your childhood, look along your shelves, search in your cupboard you might find a Lion and a Witch in there, and in a dust-jacket it could be worth as much as the last one we sold, £6,000. Or start a collection for you, your children and grand-children to love and enjoy. Clive Moss and our consultant Mike Heseltine, are two of the most respected and knowledgeable figures in the world of Children's Books, and available to help and advise.
