Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004) was born in St Andrews, Fife. She attended the Edinburgh College of Art, where, after a period of illness, she received several scholarships and graduated in 1937. Through her will, she is still providing bursaries and scholarships to support art and art history students.
In 1940, she moved to St Ives and became known for being part of the school that developed there during and after the war. She is most known for her geometric and dynamic linear forms, always appearing to be motion.
The collage works, of which this lot is a part, were created in the early 1980s during a time of illness in her life, where smaller scale works assuaged her need to create and provided a respite. They were designed using small dots of paper arranged into dynamic and colourful works of art.
